Everyone thought that the end of the world was coming when the Y2K Millenium Bug threatened the end of anything technological. Yet, we never thought a year afterwards a franchise would take over in the shooting genre for video games. Now 25 years later, Master Chief has made a return to show how much we have evolved over time with the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved.

With the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved, gamers are once again stepping onto the iconic ring world that introduced them to Master Chief nearly 25 years ago. With its updated visuals and technology, the remake introduces the franchise to a new generation and honors its broad influence. Halo’s legacy extends beyond just memorable moments, having significantly influenced the evolution of gaming’s possibilities.

Initially planned as a third-person action game, Halo experienced a significant transformation when Microsoft bought Bungie on June 19, 2000. Halo became Microsoft’s “Chief” game for the new Xbox console following the acquisition. When Halo: Combat Evolved launched on Nov. 15, 2001, it became a cult classic and one of the most influential video game franchises of all time.

The gamble was successful, as Halo: Combat Evolved launched simultaneously with the original Xbox in 2001. The game’s groundbreaking dual-stick controls, smart enemy AI, cinematic narrative, vast environments, regenerating shield mechanism, and fluid vehicle combat showed that first-person shooters could be successful on consoles, much like Unreal Tournament did for PC.

Most significantly, Halo provided Microsoft with the essential franchise that would help it compete against Sony and Nintendo.

On Nov. 9th, 2004, Halo 2 arrived, introducing matchmaking, voice chat, and ranked competition through Xbox Live and transformed online console gaming for millions of gamers.

Almost three years later, on Sep. 25th, 2007, Halo 3 launched on the revolutionary Xbox 360. The franchise achieved global recognition with this release, setting new benchmarks in entertainment sales and introducing Forge Mode and Theater Mode for players to design maps and showcase their most memorable multiplayer achievements. All while trying to avoid the dreaded “Red Ring of Death”! Whew!

Bungie continued expanding the universe with Halo 3: ODST on Sep. 22nd, 2009, and the emotional prequel Halo: Reach on Sep. 14th, 2010, before passing the torch to 343 Industries. The studio progressed Master Chief’s saga with Halo 4 (2012), Halo 5: Guardians (2015), and Halo Infinite (2021), simultaneously enhancing the gameplay and introducing the Halo franchise to novel audiences. The latter games were playable on the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X. What started as a game branched out into best-selling novels, comics, esports, cosplay, collectibles, and the well-loved machinima series Red vs. Blue, making it a cornerstone of gaming culture along the way.

Given its history, the launch of Halo: Campaign Evolved holds special significance. Instead of simply updating a beloved title, this remake revitalizes the original journey with contemporary visuals, advanced features, and enhanced gameplay, while honoring the essence that established its iconic status.

The timing of this arrival marks a new chapter for Halo Studios, underscoring the franchise’s commitment to acknowledging its history while simultaneously adapting for successive generations. Long-time fans will feel a sense of nostalgia as this marks a return to the origin of the legend. Newcomers have an ideal opportunity here to play one of games most significant titles for the first time, as if it’s the first time.

With over twenty years passed since the introduction of Master Chief, his most significant undertaking might be to assemble another group of players prepared to conclude the conflict. Over time, evolution has occurred in our world, from the smallest unseen organism to the grand wonders of our world. However, on July 28, 2026, we’ll observe Halo’s campaign evolution throughout the years.
