What counts as silent: a game that tells its whole story without words you can understand. No voice acting, no dialogue trees. A few lines in an invented language are fine. If you could play it on mute and still get everything, it counts.
Most games explain themselves. Cutscenes, codex entries, a character telling you exactly how you're supposed to feel. These games don't. They trust you to figure it out through movement, music and space and that trust is exactly why they hit so hard.
11. Rain World (2017)
The hardest game on the list.
You're a small slugcat trying to survive an ecosystem that doesn't care about you at all. Rain World is brutal and that's the story. Nothing explains itself, the world just keeps going with or without you.
What it says without words: You're not the main character of the world.
10. Abzu (2016)
The deep breath.
From the art director of Journey, Abzu drops you into an ocean full of life. It's short, calm and gorgeous and the story is there if you look for it.
What it says without words: The world was beautiful before we got here.
9. Hyper Light Drifter (2016)
The one about being sick.
A drifter explores a ruined world while coughing up blood. The developer has talked about basing it on his own heart condition and you can feel that urgency in every single fight.
What it says without words: Keep going. Even when your body won't.
8. Little Nightmares (2017)
The fairy tale gone wrong.
A tiny kid in a yellow raincoat sneaks through a nightmare ship full of giant, grotesque adults. It's creepy, it's short and the ending is going to stay in your head.
What it says without words: Being small is terrifying.
7. Limbo (2010)
The one that started the wave.
Black and white, a boy, a forest and a whole lot of ways to die. Limbo proved a tiny indie game with no dialogue could be one of the most talked about releases of its year.
What it says without words: Grief doesn't need a script.
6. Gris (2018)
The painting you walk through.
A girl loses her voice and the world loses its color, then every chapter brings a color back. Gris is about moving through grief and it's honestly one of the most beautiful games ever made.
What it says without words: Healing happens in stages.
5. Ico (2001)
The blueprint.
A horned boy holds a girl's hand and leads her out of a castle. That's it. The hand holding mechanic taught a whole generation of developers that a button press could feel like care.
What it says without words: Don't let go.
4. Inside (2016)
The ending nobody saw coming.
From the team behind Limbo. A boy runs through a world of mind control and experiments and then the last act happens and you're going to spend the next hour reading theories.
What it says without words: Everyone's being controlled. Maybe you too.
3. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (2013)
The controller that makes you cry.
You control both brothers at the same time, one on each side of the controller. The game builds that into its biggest moment and it lands in a way no cutscene ever could. Play it blind, trust me.
What it says without words: Some things you carry forever.
2. Shadow of the Colossus (2005)
The hero who might be the villain.
Sixteen giants, one sword. The game never tells you whether you're doing the right thing. The colossi don't attack first and the music sounds like mourning when they fall.
What it says without words: Winning isn't the same as being right.
1. Journey (2012)
The one everybody remembers.
You cross a desert toward a mountain and along the way you meet other players. You can't talk and you can't type, you can only sing a note and walk together. People have written letters about strangers they met in Journey.
What it says without words: You're not alone. Even when it feels like it.
Play it on mute
Words are optional. The best stories in games might be the ones that never say a thing. So which one broke you?

Did I get this ranking right?
