Before a lot of us ever stood on a board we could land a 900. For kids without a skatepark down the street the PlayStation was the park. The games taught us the trick names, the soundtracks put punk and hip hop on the same tracklist and the levels taught us what a handrail was actually for. Some of us went outside and bought a board because of these games and that's the culture moving.
This is a ranking and I ordered it, so defend your pick.
10. Skater XL (2020)
The one the community built.
Skater XL gives each foot its own stick and lets the players handle the rest. The mod scene turned it into a real spot archive, with creators rebuilding parks and street spots from all over the world.
What it taught us: Give the community the tools and they'll finish the game.
9. Tony Hawk's Project 8 (2006)
Nail the Trick.
Project 8 slowed time down and put each foot on an analog stick. For a few seconds you weren't pressing buttons anymore, you were flicking a board.
What it taught us: Trick names mean more once you feel the feet.
8. Session: Skate Sim (2022)
The hard one.
Session doesn't care if you're having fun yet. Each stick is a foot and the learning curve is a real curb. That's the point though. It feels like the first month of actually skating, slams, patience and then one clean line that makes the whole night worth it.
What it taught us: Skating is mostly falling. Getting back up is the skill.
7. skate. (2025)
The comeback.
After 15 years of fans asking, EA finally brought the series back as a free to play game set in a new city called San Vansterdam. The feel is familiar and the flick is back. Whether it becomes the next Skate 3 depends on what the community does with it.
What it taught us: A cult following can outlast a publisher's patience.
6. Tony Hawk's Underground (2003)
The story mode.
THUG let you step off the board, walk, climb and take a skater you built from a New Jersey nobody all the way to pro. It was one of the first times a skate game told a story about somebody who could look like whoever was holding the controller.
What it taught us: Going pro is a story, not a score.
5. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (2001)
The revert.
THPS3 added the revert which meant a combo never had to end. Land a vert trick, revert into a manual and keep going. On PS2 it also brought online play to the series.
What it taught us: Never let the combo die.
4. Skate 3 (2010)
The glitch era.
Port Carverton was built for team play but the internet remembers Skate 3 for the physics. Characters folding in half, boards launching into orbit. Hall of Meat turned slamming into a sport and a whole wave of YouTube channels grew up on those clips.
What it taught us: Sometimes the bail is the content.
3. skate. (2007)
Flick-It.
The first skate. threw out button combos and made the right stick your feet. San Vanelona felt like a real city with real spots, shot like a real skate video. It respected the craft over the high score.
What it taught us: Style counts more than points.
2. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 (2020)
The remake done right.
Vicarious Visions rebuilt the two games that started it all and changed almost nothing that mattered. Same parks, same energy. And a roster that finally looked more like skating does now, with skaters like Tyshawn Jones, Leo Baker and Lizzie Armanto right next to the legends.
What it taught us: Respect the original. Widen the lineup.
1. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (2000)
The blueprint.
THPS2 added the manual, the park editor and a soundtrack that put Anthrax and Public Enemy next to Rage Against the Machine. Every skate game since then is either copying it or reacting to it.
What it taught us: Everything. That's why it's number one.
Honorable mentions
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 (2025). OlliOlli World. Skate or Die!
Before we owned a board
Skate games translated skateboarding for kids like us. Trick names, spot culture, the soundtrack and the idea that style is its own score. A lot of kids who never had a park found skating through a controller first and some of them are out there filming lines right now.
So go dust off the PS2. What's your highest combo, and be honest?
Your call
Did I get this ranking right?
