They Picked the Wrong One: Zazie Beetz Is Horror's Next Icon
Cxmmunity Media is bringing the private screening to Atlanta in partnership with Trap Sushi and Evensya.
Zazie Beetz stars as Asia Reaves, an ex-convict who answers a housekeeping ad at a mysterious Manhattan high-rise, not realizing she's walking into a community with a long history of disappearances. What follows is 94 minutes of gritty, darkly funny, unapologetically unhinged survival horror. At the center of all of it, is a Black woman who refuses to be anyone's sacrifice.
Beetz plays Asia with devastating physical precision. Her character is slicing, shotgun-pumping, and fighting her way through enemies with a vengeance that only comes when you’re fighting for something you love. This isn't a survivor who gets lucky. This is a protagonist who takes over. Myha'la (Known for her breakout role in HBO's Industry) plays Maria, Asia's estranged sister, bringing genuine emotional weight to what is otherwise a blood-soaked thrill ride.
For decades, the horror genre had a well-documented relationship with Black characters: they showed up early, they died first, and they rarely got to be the hero. We’ve seen a major cultural shift over the last decade, led by Jordan Peele, pushing major projects like Get Out, Candyman and Nope. Now, with They Will Kill You getting backed by a major studio and a strong black woman lead, we can wait to see how this impacts the culture.
