I was scrolling on my tiktok timeline looking for content to write about and fell down the rabbit hole into Streamer Academy….bruh wtf is this!?

At first I thought it was an extension of Streamer University but it ended up being a GTA online server community of people attending a mythological high school. I also thought it was Sims at first and that was because a year ago AriellXO and Kiasims made Sims versions of HBCUs Clark Atlanta and Howard University.

Instead, I was exposed to this really dope community of gamers playing as high school students on this open GTA server. It’s cool to see streamers reenacting the process of waking up, choosing their fit for the day, missing the bus, skipping school or playing in the hallways. There’s also the occasional twerk-offs at the bus stop or beef between one player talking to another player’s girl. You also can’t miss out on the occasional crash outs and clapbacks from the streamers.

I guess this is when I’m supposed to write about something deep or culturally enticing about the content. Um…how about this. It was refreshing to see the continuation of American media’s fascination with American high school culture. A space of tween to teen development on preparing for college and eventual depression filled, career confused adulthood underscored by the energy of exploration thirsting for independence of American youth. What makes this different from your “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off/Mean Girls” high school trope is that Streamer Academy is more of a Black high school meets HBCU space.

How was that….?

Anyway, I couldn’t find the timeline of this community; like when it started and who started it but I can share some of the top creators and their clips.
